The Michael Jackson biopic has surpassed $1 billion at the box office, becoming the first biopic to achieve the coveted milestone.
The film, titled Michael, has amassed $629.8 million in ticket sales outside the U.S. and $371.8 million domestically, bringing its total box office collection to $1.001 billion.
The Michael Jackson biopic moonwalked to the strongest biopic opening in box office history, surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody, 12 weeks ago.
Michael made its debut to global audiences in significant numbers at AMC Entertainment’s theaters across the U.S. and internationally in April.
Michael surpassed the record of the highest-grossing musical biopic, which had been Bohemian Rhapsody. The 2018 musical biographical drama film on iconic Queen singer Freddie Mercury grossed $911 million worldwide.
The success of Michael is the latest in a string of major openings in 2026, following Project Hail Mary and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which hit the billion-dollar mark this year.
“Audiences have embraced the film from the beginning, turning it into a unique cultural phenomenon in theaters around the world,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson. “Their passion speaks to the enduring appeal of one of the greatest recording artists of all time, and it underscores the continued strength and vitality of the theatrical moviegoing experience.”
Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, was released in U.S. theaters on April 24. It follows the life of the king of pop, covering his involvement in the Jackson 5 in the 1960s to the Bad tour in the late 1980s. Jackson is portrayed by his nephew Jaafar Jackson and as a child by Juliano Krue Valdi, both in their film debuts.
