Freddy Cannon, a rock and roll singer who is best known for his hits including \u201cPalisades Park\u201d and \u201cTallahassee Lassie” has died at the age of 89.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His death was announced by longtime friend and iHeart Radio producer Tom Cuddy, who said it occurred before Cannon was scheduled to do ” what would have been his final interview\u201d on July 11.\u00a0Variety<\/a>\u00a0further reported that Cannon died at a hospice facility in California after recently being diagnosed with cancer. He was working on\u00a0music<\/a>\u00a0right up until his hospitalization. \u201cFreddy didn\u2019t do ballads,\u201d Cuddy said. \u201cDick Clark once told me that every time he hosted an oldies concert, he asked Freddy to open it, because he knew Freddy would get the audience on their feet with up-tempo rock and roll.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cannon’s hit \u201cTallahassee Lassie\u201d made it to No. 6 on Billboard\u2019s Hot 100 in 1959, followed by \u201cWay Down in New Orleans\u201d reaching No. 3 on the Hot 100 that same year. \u201cPalisades Park\u201d in 1962 went to No. 3 on the Hot 100. He also was known by his nickname, \u201cBoom Boom\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cannon’s representative further told Variety that Cannon holds the record for the most appearances on Dick Clark\u2019s \u201cAmerican Bandstand,\u201d with 110. He had many other famous fans, including Mick Jagger<\/a> and Led Zeppelin\u2019s Robert Plant, as well as author Stephen King<\/a>, who mentioned the singer in four of his books, including 11\/22\/63<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In 2011, Cannon released his autobiography\u00a0Where the Action Is<\/em>. He is survived by his children, five grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
