Smokey Robinson

Posted on 18 May 2023 by Brian Walsh

Smokey Robinson is set to perform at the Fox Theatre on August 5, returning to one the most significant venues in his hometown Detroit.

The upcoming “Robinson’s Show” marks the Motown legend’s first hometown concert since he played the Detroit River Days festival in 2019.

The Fox Theatre played a big role in Robinson’s musical history, as the singer and his group, The Miracles, played several shows at the venue in the ’60s. Then, Robinson headlined the Fox’s grand reopening night in 1988 after the Ilitch family restored the 1928 venue at a cost of about $12 million.

Robinson, who was born in Detroit, encouraged Berry Gordy to found Motown Records, which made him a star. “Shop Around,” which was written by Robinson and performed by his group, became Motown’s first million-selling hit.
