Steve Mandell

Posted on 03 April 2018 by Brian Walsh

Guitarist Steve Mandell, who along with Eric Weissberg on banjo recorded the surprise hit duet, “Dueling Banjos” (#2-1973) from the movie “Deliverance”, died March 14. The 76 year-old had been suffering from prostate cancer. Both players were well-known studio musicians working with folk artists like Judy Collins and John Denver. Steve had been with the Phoenix Singers and Eric with the Tarriers. He arranged the song, originally called “Feudin’ Banjos” when it was written in 1954 and it went on to be nominated for Best Original Song by the Golden Globes in 1973 (losing to Michael Jackson’s “Ben”). After leaving Judy Collins’ touring band, Steve worked at a variety of retail jobs while still keeping his hand in music. He was a well-kept secret for years since pressings of the hit single listed either “Deliverance” or just Eric as artist.
